Before now you probably never knew that there are different hair types. All you knew was that you had a mass of densely packed curls and coils. While this may come as a bit of a shocker to you, it is not uncommon that most women don’t know what type of hair they have or even how to care for it. There are various terms for different hair types, hair care products to use, and even how to use these products in natural hair regimens. Sit tight sis, let’s learn.

When you think of type 3 natural hair, one visualizes bouncy, kinky, voluminous tight curls. Type 3 curly hair ranges from a light curl to tight, curly tendrils, and usually has a combination of textures. They are defined and springy, with more height and volume at the root than type 2s. Type 3 hair, out of all of the curl textures, has the most diversity across its spectrum.

Type 3 hair can be divided into three subcategories:

  • Type 3a

Type 3a curls have more of an S pattern as they tend to be looser and larger than other curl types. The size of each curl is similar to the circumference of a thick piece of sidewalk chalk. Type 3a tends to be naturally smooth and soft, it’s best to work with its natural shape and not overwhelm it with heavy moisturizing products meant for tighter coily hair. Rather use lightweight moisturizers for hydration.

  • Type 3b

Type 3b curls take on a ringlet shape and have a significant amount of volume. Each curl is about as wide as a tapered candlestick. Because 3b curls are fairly tight and springy, this hair type experiences a lot of shrinkages when it goes from wet to dry.

  • Type 3c

Type 3c curls are the tightest and stiffest of all curl types. Their corkscrew shape is about the width of a pencil. As with type 3b hair, brushing or straightening 3c type curls is a bad idea that leads to breakage and ultra-frizz.

Type 4 is the hair type that most black women have. This type of hair is kinky, extremely wiry, has tight coils, and is very fragile. Type 4 hair is usually coarse with hair strands tightly packed together. Type 4 also referred to as the black hair type is divided into three types:

  • Type 4a

Type 4a hair is easy to identify since it forms a perfect “S” shape when stretched. The hair forms a visible coil pattern with spirals and has a circumference close to that of a crochet needle.

Type 4b

Type 4b hair has a fluffy cotton appearance. The hair strands have a “Z” shape and do not have a clear coily pattern.

Type 4c

Type 4c hair is more tightly curled than 4b hair and does not have a clear curl pattern. The hair strands in this hair type clump up easily. 

A common misconception about afro hair is that it doesn’t grow long. This isn’t true. The only difference is that it requires much more care to avoid breakage.

Not everyone blessed with natural curls has the same curly hair type. By determining your unique curl type, you can find the right products and habits for managing your hair. Let’s explore each curl type and what products are best suited for them.

As a general rule of thumb, you should moisturize your hair every few days. You can certainly moisturize your hair every day, but you should only do so if your hair needs it. Most people may need a few spritzes of water every morning to keep their hair feeling soft and pliable. Some women will need to do it more often, while others can go longer between moisturizing sessions.

A moisturising session can mean anything from spritzing your hair with water to doing a full-on moisturising and sealing session with moisturising leave-in. 

You may think it is tedious to moisturize your hair so often, but the truth is that moisture and protein balance is the key to healthy natural hair.

Here Is A Weekly Moisturizing Routine For Type 3-4 Hair.

First and most importantly, moisturize with the right moisturizer.

Finding a good moisturiser and a good sealant is always essential to healthy hair. Trying out different moisturizers that do not even have water as the first or second ingredient sure does damage the hair. A good moisturizer for curly or kinky hair must always have water as the first or second ingredient. ALWAYS! Dry ends break off and do not retain length.  One way to prevent that from happening is to moisturize your ends often. Regular moisturizing will help you grow healthy, longer hair and heal dry damaged hair.

The Moisturizing Methods.

LOC Method

The LOC method is a deep moisturizing and sealing technique that’s very popular in the natural hair community. The acronym “LOC” stands for liquid, oil, and cream. When products are layered in this order, you can expect lasting moisture. 

There are some variations to the LOC method. Some people prefer doing the LCO method, requiring a leave-in conditioner, cream, and then a sealing oil.

Try both methods to see which one works best for your hair. Everyone’s hair is different, so it’s important to try things for yourself and see how your hair reacts.

Weekly Deep Conditioning.

One of the most important ways to moisturize natural hair is a consistent deep conditioning routine. Consistency is always key in natural hair growth. Deep conditioners sit in your hair long enough to penetrate the strands by packing your hair with the moisture and nutrients it needs to thrive. Deep conditioning means applying and leaving it in for a minimum of 30 minutes to give it time to penetrate deeply. A deep conditioner must contain a deep penetrating ingredient such as Cupuacu butter. This is one of the factors that makes deep conditioning different from regular conditioning. After the deep conditioning, style with your normal products, enjoy the results, and repeat every 1-2 weeks! If your hair is extremely dry, you should deep condition it weekly.  Also, some ladies incorporate a hot oil treatment into their moisture routine, which is also a great option.

Stay Hydrated!

If you are not well hydrated, it will reflect on your skin and hair. Drink as much water as your body can handle on a daily basis. The recommended amount of water for an adult is 2 liters a day. So, try your best to stay hydrated all the time.

There are several reasons why some women can’t stop touching their hair.

  • You want to make sure your hair is perfect. You obsess about your hair being perfect and so you always mess with it.

Wear A Protective Style.

Try giving your hair a break by putting in extensions, wearing braids, twists, etc. This not only protects the ends of your hair, but it keeps you from being able to run your fingers through your strands.

Updos Styling.

Every strand on your head has a certain type of porosity and hair porosity types can differ greatly from one person to the next. Your hair porosity type can and should determine how you create your hair care routine, including which ingredients make up the shampoo and conditioner you use. Knowing your hair porosity type can also help you choose the right hair care products to keep your hair well-moisturized, healthy and shiny.

Hair porosity is a fancy way to talk about your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is affected by the flexibility of the outer hair layer called the cuticle, which determines how easily moisture and oils pass in and out of your hair. For most people, porosity can be determined by genetics, but it can also be affected by external factors such as exposure, heat treatments, and chemical processing. Porosity can be discussed in three categories: 

  • Low
  • Medium
  • High

One of the ways to determine the category of your hair porosity is using your hair characteristics. This method is somewhat unconventional and requires that you understand your hair and keenly observe how it behaves.

How To Determine Hair Porosity Using Hair Characteristics.

Low Porosity Hair Characteristics.

Low porosity means that the cuticles are close together. This makes it hard for moisture to penetrate the cuticle and reach the cortex. However, on the other hand, this hair doesn’t lose moisture easily once you use the right hair products on it.

The Characteristics Of Low Porosity Hair Are:

  1. Takes a long time for low porosity hair to get wet.
  2. Products sit on the hair hence prone to product build-up.
  3. Heat is needed for better product absorption.
  4. Hair tends to be too oily.
  5. Hair takes time to dry up.
  6. Water beads up on hair.
  7. Higher probability to get dandruff.
  8. Hair resists colour treatments.
  9. The hair needs to be clarified for better moisture retention.
  10. Hair reacts better using humectants.
  11. The hair resists conditioners.

High Porosity Hair Characteristics.

High porosity means that the cuticles have a lot of space between them. This hair easily gets moisture from products but it loses moisture even quicker so this can lead to dry, brittle hair.

The Characteristics Of High Porosity Hair Are:

  1. Hair feels dry most of the time.
  2. Rapid moisture loss.
  3. Frizzy hair.
  4. Hair is prone to breakage.
  5. Hair gets wet very easily.
  6. Hair tangles easily.
  7. Rarely looks shiny.
  8. Absorbs products very easily.
  9. Hardly gets greasy.
  10. Hair lacks elasticity.

Medium Porosity Hair Characteristics.

Medium porosity means that the cuticles have a bit of space between them. This means that moisture easily penetrates the cuticle and reaches the cortex. However, your hair also loses moisture but less than high porosity hair.

The Characteristics Of Medium Porosity Hair Are:

  1. The hair is easy to style.
  2. Normal/Medium porosity hair can hold styles for a good length of time.
  3. Hair tends to look healthy.
  4. Hair takes in colour well.
  5. The hair doesn’t take too long to air dry.

To determine your hair porosity, there are also different hair porosity tests you can perform to know if your hair falls into one of these categories: low porosity, medium porosity, or high porosity.

The Most Common Hair Porosity Tests Include:

  • Float Test
  • Slip & Slide Test
  • Dry Test
  • Watershed Test

Float Hair Porosity Test

The Float Test is the most common and most recommended hair porosity test. This test is very simple and only requires a glass of water and 2-3 strands of hair from different parts of your head.

How To Discover Your Hair Porosity Using The Float Test.

  1. Fill a clear, clean glass with water.
  2. Take a few strands of your hair.
  3. Place your strand of hair in the glass of water and watch how it behaves.
  4. If your hair stays at the top of the glass, then it is low porosity. If your hair floats in the middle, it has normal/medium porosity. If your hair sinks at the bottom, it is high porosity.
  5. Repeat this process with hair from different parts of your head and record the results.

Slip & Slide Hair Porosity Test

The slip and slide test could be considered the most complicated. We advise that you should not rely on this test alone to determine your hair porosity. This should be used together with at least two other tests.

How To Test Your Hair Porosity Using The Slip and Slide Test.

  1. Take a strand of your hair between your fingertips.
  2. Slowly move up your fingertips towards the scalp as you feel your strand of hair.
  3. If it feels smooth then you have low porosity hair but if it feels bumpy, then, the raised cuticles mean that you have high porosity hair.

Dry Hair Porosity Test.

This is one of the easiest to perform and interpret but you must be patient. Again, don’t rely on this method alone.

How To Test Your Hair Porosity Using The Dry Test Method.

  1. Wash your hair with your regular shampoo and rinse but don’t dry it out.
  2. Don’t use any other hair product.
  3. Put water somewhere on your body, e.g. arms, and don’t dry it out.
  4. Observe if your hair or your body dries first.
  5. If your hair dries out before your body, then, it means that you have high porosity. However, if your body dries out before your hair, then, you have low porosity hair.

Watershed Hair Porosity Test.

This test is also referred to as the Absorption Test. This is one of the simplest ways to determine your hair porosity. It works by observing how your hair reacts when absorbing water and other hair products.

Low porosity hair takes time to absorb moisture and products because the cuticles in this hair type are tightly closed while high porosity hair absorbs moisture and products very quickly because of the open cuticles.

How To Test Your Hair Porosity Using The Watershed Test.

  1. Put water in a spray bottle.
  2. Take a section of your hair and spray it with water.
  3. Observe how long it takes for your hair to absorb the water.
  4. If your hair absorbs water quickly, then you have high porosity hair. If it absorbs slowly, then, you have low porosity hair.

Knowing what category of hair porosity you have can help you better understand how to manage, treat, and care for your hair. And that can lead to hair that’s stronger and healthier. One of the easiest ways to ‘pop up’ your hairstyle is to add a pop of colour to your curls. It’s no secret that dyed hair tends to be fragile compared to colour free hair so it’s even more important to pay extra attention to handling your curls and coils. Here’s a rundown of helpful tips to maintain your colour-treated hair at home.

1. Always Moisturize.

After getting your hair coloured, the most noticeable change you’ll experience is dryness. Typically after wash days, you probably have to wait up to a week before you re-moisturize your hair. Well, after colouring your hair, you now have to refresh every two days to keep your hair moisturized. This is because hair colouring in a way alters one’s hair porosity making it highly porous. This means you have to moisturize often to avoid dryness which eventually leads to breakage. Here are a few products to help you avoid dryness and keep your curls moisturized.

2. Handle Gently.

Dyed hair tends to be fragile. That means it’s important to handle your hair gently after a colour treatment. Be ultra-sensitive during washing, detangling and styling. This means making sure to use products specifically designed for colour-treated natural hair when washing and moisturizing. Also, get yourself a good quality, wide-tooth comb for detangling as anything else can lead to damage or hair loss. If you’re a swimmer, always use a swimming cap to protect your colour-treated hair from chemicals in the pool.

3. Everyday Care

Once you’ve had your hair dyed, you’ll need to get into a daily maintenance routine to keep your look moisturized and beautiful. Everyone will do this slightly differently but the key principles remain the same. Avoid washing too regularly (most find once a week to be enough), but be sure to moisturize every day. Put some hair serum in your hands and apply from tip to root after moisturizing with a leave-in conditioner. A little goes a long way in application.

4. Carry Out More Protein Treatments.

While deep-conditioning treatments are sufficient for most colour-treated hairstyles, some people also add a protein mask into the mix. These are designed for protein-deficient hair, a real risk for hair that has been colour-treated due to the chemicals in most dyes. If you are noticing an increase in the number of hairs falling out, try one of these treatments. Protein-based products are designed to fill the gaps in each strand that occur due to cuticle damage so they can add strength and shine.

5. Protect Your Hair Overnight.

Finally, nighttime needs a bit of thought when you’re looking after colour-treated, textured hair. With your hair moving about on the pillow for 6+ hours each night, there is an increased risk of breakage and split ends. To avoid this, get yourself a bedtime hair routine. Apply oil evenly across the hair then divide into two/three ponytails, depending on the thickness of your hair. This will prevent matting and help avoid knots. Wrap your hair in a silk scarf for protection and then head to bed. A night routine like this can postpone frizz and damage for weeks.

Have you been experiencing tangles, breakage, and your hair doesn’t look its best? It might be time for a trim. Trimming your hair can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but there are so many benefits. It takes less time. You don’t have to leave your house. You are completely in control of how much length you take off (we’ve all had a hairstylist take off way more than we asked for!) And once you have the right tools, it’s free! You can quickly save hundreds of dollars in your first couple of years of trimming your own hair. 

Trimming is essential to healthy natural hair and length retention and comes with a lot of benefits. But before we talk about that, let’s address the most pressing question related to hair trimming.

And that is – how often should we trim our hair? According to experts and hair stylists, we must trim about a quarter-inch of our hair every 12 weeks. If you feel that your hair grows faster, then you can get a trim every 9 to 10 weeks too. Similarly, if your hair grows slowly then you can trim once every 14 to 15 weeks. The more you get to know your hair, the easier it will be to see when you are due for a trim.

Here Are Reasons You Should Always Trim Your Natural Hair.

  • Split ends naturally start developing a couple months after every trim. Split ends are caused by natural wear and tear on your hair, and while you can prevent split ends from occurring as quickly, it is impossible to completely eliminate them. When you don’t trim split ends, they continue to split all the way up the hair shaft. This results in the loss of the entire strand, rather than just the end.
  • Split ends and single strand knots catch and snag more easily on each other, increasing tangles.
  • Tangles are enough of a problem on their own, but they also increase breakage, especially if you don’t detangle gently. Having to detangle your hair is a process all on its own but that process is made much more difficult when you are faced with having ends that are not in good shape. You will likely have to manage split ends, breakages and all sorts. To prevent tangles resulting breakages, it’s essential to trim off split ends and single strand knots. Trimming your hair regularly can cut down on the time it takes to detangle.
  • Split ends also make your hair (particularly your ends) look scraggly, frizzy, and unhealthy. Frizz can occur if you tend to wear a lot of hats and scarfs.  Hair is very delicate and frizz can eventually cause damage to your hair strands. Regular trimming can help to keep this under control.

How To Trim Your Natural Hair At Home.

  • Only cut your hair with professional hair shears. If there is one important thing that I can tell you about trimming your hair it is that you should always make sure you use proper professional scissors.  These are specially made for hair cutting. Sharp scissors like these are non-negotiable. In fact, if you aren’t willing to get a pair, you’re better off not trimming your hair at all. Any other scissors will leave a jagged end that is far more prone to splitting in the future. Do NOT use your office or kitchen scissors on your hair, under any circumstances!
  • Once you have hair shears, don’t use them for anything besides your hair. Otherwise, they will grow dull and blunt, which defeats the purpose of getting hair shears.
  • Cut dry. Some people cut hair wet because wet hair is more stretched, so it is easier to see and make a clean cut. However, your hair is also weakest when it is wet, so trimming wet can lead to more breakage and damage. The best way to visualize this point is by imagining two pieces of paper. One is damp and the other is dry. When you cut the dry one, you can get a sharp line across, right? But when you snip the wet paper, the line is uneven. The scissors did the job, but now the wet paper is cut into a soft, jagged line, looking almost like ripped paper. It’s the same when you cut wet hair. You might want to trim after washing your hair but we recommend playing it safe and cutting your hair dry.
  • Cut carefully. We have provided a range of common methods below for cutting natural hair and some are easier than others, but any of them can go wrong if you rush or don’t focus. Give yourself plenty of time, especially the first time you do it.

DIY Natural Hair Trimming Methods.

  • Two-strand Twists: When you twist your hair, notice the frizzy, dry, coarse ends at the very bottom of your twists? You can go twist by twist and snip those off, leaving soft, clean ends. This is a great method for those with shorter hair. The smaller you make your twists, the more accurate your cut will be!
  • Curl by Curl: As opposed to twisting your hair, let your hair fall in clumped curls. Then go curl by curl, trimming off the scraggly ends. This method is recommended for those with looser curls (type 3A – 3C). Many naturals have withered ends at the crown area that need extra TLC. That means you need to apply more deep conditioning treatments, apply protein more frequently, and be diligent about trimming that specific area when you get a trim.
  • Search and Trim: You can also leave your hair down and carefully look through your ends for split ends and single strand knots, snipping them off when you find them. Warning: this method is time-consuming, and will leave you with hairs of slightly different lengths since you won’t cut every hair. Don’t feel like doing twists? At least make sure to cut in small sections. Focusing on a few hairs at a time will help you organize while you trim, and it will prevent overzealous cutting.
